5 Don’ts of Mold Removal

Do you have mold in your home? If you’re like most homeowners, mold removal will be first and foremost on your mind. However, getting rid of mold isn’t as simple as many homeowners would like to believe.

Below are 5 common mold removal mistakes homeowners make that you should avoid for effective mold removal.

  1. Cleaning mold with your normal vacuum cleaner

Mold spores are extremely small. They can pass through a normal filter in a vacuum and be dispersed in the air as a result. You would need a HEPA vacuum to get rid of mold spores. These vacuums are able to trap particles larger than 0.3 microns.

  1. Not setting up proper containment for mold removal

The process of removing mold involves disturbing the mold. This is likely to result in the dispersal of mold spores.

It only takes a few spores to establish an infestation. If you don’t set up proper containment to prevent the spread of spores from the contaminated part of the home, the mold spores are likely to spread to other parts of the home.

  1. Handling mold without personal protective equipment

When mold is agitated, the spores become airborne. It is therefore important to minimize your exposure to mold spores by wearing personal protective equipment such as face masks or respirators as well as gloves.

This equipment can be expensive. It is easier to have a professional carry out the removal as they will be equipped for the job.

  1. Using bleach on mold

Many people believe that using bleach is the best way to get rid of mold. While bleach is effective as a cleaning agent, it is not effective when trying to get rid of mold. It will only kill that mold that is on the surface. It won’t clean the mold that is deep within porous materials.

Bleach is also quite harsh. It can therefore cause serious damage to surfaces. You may end up destroying your items.

  1. Ignoring the problem

Ignoring mold is not the answer. In fact, it’s one of the worst mistakes you could make when it comes to dealing with a mold infestation. The longer you ignore the problem, the bigger the mold problem becomes and the greater the damage it does.

The best thing you can do when faced with mold is to call a professional to have your home inspected and for the mold to be removed.
