Basement Leaks In Long Island NY
A wet basement not only feels and smells nasty but if left unchecked it can pose a great amount of rusk to the valuables in your house. A wet basement can easily ruin your flooring and walls. It also encourages mold growth along with added vulnerability to damaged roofing. Moreover, a wet and ruined basement is never a pleasant surprise. Here are a few ways to prevent such leaky mishaps in your house and keep it good condition.
#1: Cleaning your gutters
At times when water pools surround your foundation, there are chances that it might leave your gutter clogged, which eventually leads to the gutter overflowing with water. Make sure that you’ve removed all the leaves, garbage and debris from the gutters and have installed leaf guards for protection. Also, consider extending the water downspout to direct water a few feet away from your house.
#2: Keep a check on the trees
Trees with aggressive roots, like silver maple or American Elm, should be planted at least 20 feet away from the house to protect the foundation from the invasion of tree roots. However, small trees like fir can be planted close to the house and require the tree to be only 10-12 feet away from the house.
#3: Consider changing the grade
You need to make sure that the soil surrounding your house is pitched at least at a slope of 1/4” feet in order to guide the draining water towards the yard and not the foundation. If not, you can simply pass more soil and rake it smooth until the grade is highest.
