Facts about Long Island
According to 2013 US Census data, Long, Island is the most populous island in the United States. Long Island New York is the largest island adjoining the contiguous United States, extending approximately 118 miles east-northeast from the mouth of the Hudson River. It is separated from the mainland on the north by the Long Island Sound and bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the south and east. Twenty miles at its widest point, Long Island is composed of low plateaus on the north, longitudinal ridges of glacial moraine through the central parts of the island, and gently sloping plains to the south.  Long Island is an expansive, densely populated island in southeastern New York State, stretching east from New York City. Along its Atlantic coast are Jones Beach State Park, Fire Island and Montauk Point State Park, the latter home to the late-1700s Montauk Lighthouse. On the east end, the North Fork is home to wineries and the Hamptons are towns characterized by upscale homes, trendy restaurants and antiques shops.
Massive continental glaciers once covered Connecticut, carrying huge amounts of boulders and soil that were deposited to the south after the glaciers melted. “The result is a deposit called till,” explains Alden, “a mixture of everything from clay to house-sized boulders.”You can see some boulders which are glacial deposits at the beach at Garvies Point Preserve. For an in-depth look at Long Island’s geology and archaeology, consider visiting the Garvies Point Museum, which features exhibits about the geological and early cultural foundations of Long Island.
Because of these fantastic glaciers Long Island is famous for white-sand beaches and world-class wineries, Long Island also has quaint fishing villages, grand historic mansions, unique museums and fabulous shopping–from large malls and designer outlets to small seaside boutiques and roadside farmstands. Follow the North Fork Trail scenic byway to wineries, farm markets, antique shops and restaurants serving fresh local produce and seafood. For seaside glamour: The Hamptons, on the South Fork, were named the ultimate summer playground.
Being surrounded by such beauty makes people want to stay in the area. Long Island is known for it’s warm charm, and welcoming citizens. Long Island also has multiple seasons. The diverse climate has four distinct seasons. Summers are comfortable and warm, with daytime temperatures averaging in the mid 70s to mid 80s (degrees F) and cooler evenings. The weather is moderately cool and sunny in springtime and autumn, when spectacular fall foliage attracts thousands of visitors. Cold, snowy winters create a wonderland of magnificent scenery in parks and villages.
When the seasons become wet and damp on Long Island, the seasonal change may require the need for Basement Waterproofing or possible foundation repair as having water damage occur can become a costly situation. Contact the professionals at AM Shield to provide their expertise.
